Lots of humour, especially involving a new character, the Shonin, a mummified oriental monk re-awoken after a few centuries of meditation and not in the best of moods. Liked this sixth volume in the series very much indeed. Throw in the crazed followers of a bizarre serial killer and the fact that God with a capital G is not what He was then things begin to get interesting.
The Getaway God is no exception and features Stark trying to avert the apocalypse as angry elder gods gear up to recover an ancient artefact formerly in his care. The series by Richard Kadrey has rightly gained lots of praise for its tightly written, hard boiled and witty stories. Half-angel half-human, former holder of the title Lucifer, serial escapee from Hell, and owner of a video store in Los Angeles (a city which the author portrays as bearing a disturbing similarity to the aforementioned Hell) - yes, James Stark alias Sandman Slim is not your usual hero.
